The Perfect Weekend Breakfast

Saturday mornings are my favorite time to sleep in with my husband and dogs and start the morning with a healthy and wholesome breakfast. Waffles have always been one of my favorite Saturday morning go to dishes when I’m in the mood for something sweet, hearty, and delicious.

Waffles offer anyone the opportunity to customize and create unique and savory flavor possibilities. Don’t be afraid to experiment with your essential oils too! How about adding a few drops of orange essential oil to your waffle mix for a refreshing citrus infused breakfast? Or perhaps create a more floral based and sophisticated waffle with fresh cut basil and lavender essential oil in your waffle mix? Get the idea? Have fun with it!

Apples and cinnamon are definitely one of my favorite flavor combinations when it comes to breakfast time meals. During the fall, I love discovering and experimenting with all the different varieties of local apples available at the farmers market right here in Colorado Springs. I encourage you to check out your local farmers markets in the fall time, you may be surprised by all the wonderful fresh and organic options available to you!

Ok, back to my waffles! For my mix, I use Gary’s True Grit Einkorn Pancake and Waffle Mix. Unlike most waffle mixes, which are packed with empty calories and carbs, Young living has created a healthy mixture packed with ancient einkorn wheat and a blend of ground legumes, for added protein and fiber. Einkorn wheat is considered one of the oldest varieties of wheat and is known for its low gluten levels, making this waffle mixture easier to digest for most.

For this recipe, I’m choosing to keep my waffle mix basic, by simply sticking to the cooking directions, which can be found on the back of the box. My focus today is the waffle topping: Freshly sliced apples infused with Young Livings cinnamon essential oil! Again, I’m going to encourage you to have fun and experiment. Use your favorite type of apple, or try something new from your local farmers market. Perhaps create a mixture from several different types of apples?

Simply peel, core and thinly slice 4 apples. In a skillet melt ¼ cup of butter and add apples, stir constantly until apples appear tender (about 5 minutes). Add ½ cup of brown sugar and three drop Young Living essential oil. Cook for an additional 2 minutes, remove from heat and serve over warm waffles.

Cooking Tips

Always taste test your recipes drop by drop. Essential oils are extremely powerful to the pallet and may vary based on preference. Although a recipes calls for three drops, this may seem too strong for some, so add slowly and as needed!
